Goodbye Data

Watch what happens if you rename a source file then try to sync the Briefcase:

Not only does Briefcase seem to indicate that the file is already deleted, "Documents Deleted", it is impossible to tell which copy of the file is to be deleted, or if both the source and Briefcase copies of the files will be deleted. So, let's double-click the confusing entry and see what's actually going to happen. The result of the futile exercise to discover what's actually going to happen to your important data is shown below.
   
Just above, we saw that Briefcase wanted to delete one or both of a pair of synchronised files but we didn't actually know which of the two or if both of them were about to get deleted. Double-clicking the entry on the Briefcase screen, we get this:

First, let's focus on the text at the top of the dialog box, which reads "This has been deleted from one location and updated in the other location since the last sync."

Whoa! Back up a minute there, Humphrey. The file was renamed. It was neither deleted nor updated.
   
Now let's focus on the text for the first option, which reads "Keep this version and copy it to the other location".

The English is awfully confusing; this location, that location, the other location. What location, for crying out loud? The potential for data loss from all the confusion caused by sheer sloppiness in Windows Vista is immense.
